Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy

St. Agnes will be the location for the celebration of the Ukrainian Catholic Divine Liturgy on Sunday afternoon, June 9 at 4 p.m. There are seven different “rites” including the Latin Rite (Roman) that is celebrated at St. Agnes. The seven different rites trace their roots back to the very early Church and are expressions of the culture of the people.  The Byzantine rite is influenced greatly by the Greek and Syriac cultures.  Fr. Jason Charron and the youth choir from Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carnegie, PA will pray the Divine Liturgy.  All are invited – this fulfills your Sunday Mass.

Spring Gala

The 16th Annual St. Agnes Spring Gala will be held on Thursday, June 6th at the Big Slide Brewery and Public House from 6:00-9:00 p.m.  Please join us for a delicious dinner, complimentary beer and wine all evening, and a silent auction. Invitations will be mailed in May, and all are welcome to come celebrate and support St. Agnes School.  Thank you to our hosts, Big Slide owners Chris and Catherine Ericson, parents of Grace ’14 and C.J. ’18.

Blue Spruce Trees at St. Agnes

Two stately blue spruce trees have dominated the landscape of St. Agnes Church for over 50 years.  The trees have become landmarks for many people.  During the winter months they are festooned with Christmas lights marking this joyful time of the year.

Over the past few years many have witnessed the fungal disease Cytospora canker slowly damage the lower branches of the spruce trees.  “The branch damage/death is quite extensive, especially in the left tree, so pruning would leave an unsightly tree” according to Consulting Forester, Tim Chick.

At the present time, a major renovation of the church entrance is taking place because the handicap ramp heaves so dramatically in the cold of winter that it blocks the door closed.  The steps at the other two entrances are badly deteriorating.  The question was raised as to whether this might be the time to deal with the dying spruce trees as well.

Last weekend, April 27-28, a poll was taken of the parishioners concerning the future of these trees.  It was recognized that there is great emotional attachment to these trees by many in the Lake Placid Community.  87% voted to cut down the two diseased trees.  Despite the strong attachment to these trees by seemingly everyone in the community, now seems to be the time to cut them down.

“What will replace them?”  Since the planned renovation of the entranceway had these trees remaining, no proposal has been determined at this time.

Ghana Medical Clinic Supported by St. Agnes

In August 2017 Drs. John and Janet Asare gave a presentation to interested parishioners about the construction of a medical clinic in Ghana.  The Parish Council approved this venture, and construction is underway. Dr. John Asare graduated from Plattsburgh State before beginning his medical studies, and he and Janet were married at St. Agnes. If you would like to support this important project, please make checks payable to St. Agnes with Ghana Medical Clinic on the memo line.  Thank you.
